One of my favorite things about living in Mexico City is the territorial diversity. From the heart of the city stretching to the outlying suburbs, there are an assortment of lifestyles, history, scenery and then some. No matter how much time you spend here – no matter what you think you’ve seen – Mexico always surprises you. In an effort to get to know my new surroundings, I made it a goal to visit all 21 of the Barrios Mágicos (Magical Neighborhoods) of Mexico City. There are some that I visit frequently, like Roma-Condesa and Cuajimalpa; and others that I had never heard of, like Mixquic, that are just a delight to explore. In this adventure, I marked off my tenth magic barrio, La Merced.
It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like….
Season change in Mexico City brings beautiful flowers along Reforma. It may not be as nice as the natural changing color of the leaves, or that first powdery snow, but it’s something I very much appreciate. A sign of change, a sign of closure and a sign of new beginnings all with simple seasonal flowers.
So in case you don’t know, I am a born and raised Metro-Detroiter. What I love most about Michigan are the four seasons– not so much the long winters, but I appreciate the option it’s there if I fancy it. Moving to Mexico, I knew I’d never have to witness a terrible winter ever again in my life, but to be honest, seeing the same temperatures year-round kind of makes me lose track with, well everything…. it’s really December already? Without being able to tell the cycle of seasons, how will I ever have closure?! [Read more…]
Mexico City – There’s No Place Like Home
Moving to Mexico City, or even visiting Mexico City, can be quite intimidating as one of the largest foreign lands in the world, but it shouldn’t be. There are more familiarities from home than you think, making you feel like you never left Kansas.
If you are based in US there are a few mexican restaurants to check out in Chicago, you will be amazed by the great dishes that the mexican culture has to offer.
One of the world’s largest cities, Mexico City, is not as intimidating and foreign as you may think. Recently, I’ve been coming across some articles with titles such as ”Misconceptions about Mexico City” and as I read through them, I won’t lie, I too once had some of the same ideas. Dirty, dangerous, poor and crowded is what often came to mind when I told my family I was moving to Mexico’s capital, Distrito Federal (D.F.). Before moving to D.F. I was a little apprehensive as to how I would assimilate because even though I visited many times, I still had my own misconceptions. For vacations, I always would wander the “touristy” areas; Coyoacan, Xochimilco, Basilica de Guadalupe, the Zócalo, etc. and I thought my living environment would have that same authentic Mexican vibe. As I am settling in though, I am realizing there are far more familiarities from home in the USA than I could have EVER imagined!
Change is an Opportunity to Grow
In life, if something’s not right, go left. From the small beach town of Puerto Vallarta to one of the biggest cities in the world, Mexico City; why moving was the correct thing for me.
So. I made the move. I am in-process of becoming Chilanga (a girl from Mexico City). I had been living in Puerto Vallarta from January 1 to October 1 and it is bittersweet to see another chapter of my life pass by. Let me give you some insight on why I decided to move to Vallarta in the first place and why now I decided to move to the big city, DF. My Favorite moving company is always Gold Coast removalists like Vic Palmer they offer quality and excellent prices. [Read more…]
Semana Santa in Mexico City
Typically during the Semana Santa, or Easter week, Mexican families flock to the beach from cities like Guadalajara, Querétaro, Aguascalientes, and Mexico City. Semana Santa is undoubtedly the busiest time for beach towns along Mexico’s coast and for someone living in Puerto Vallarta (like me), the best time to escape! So I took the long weekend to travel to Mexico City, a city I have visited many times before, but never quite fully discovered. [Read more…]
